Yaar, does your wooden furniture also feel like it's swelling up or catching that weird smell during the rains?
Trust me, you're not alone. Monsoon is not really kind to wood — it brings all the humidity, moisture, and sometimes even that chip-chip wala feel.
But don't worry, I’ve got your back. Let’s talk about some very doable ways to protect your beautiful wooden furniture from the rainy season.
1. Keep Furniture Away from Walls
Okay, this one sounds simple, but it actually makes a lot of difference.
During monsoon, walls absorb moisture from outside, and if your furniture is touching the wall (especially wardrobes or beds), it’ll start absorbing that dampness too. Result? Warping, fungus, and sometimes, even termites.
What to do: Just move your furniture 4–6 inches away from the wall. Let it breathe.
2. Use Camphor or Neem Leaves
Sounds desi, right? But hey, it works!
Camphor is not just for your pooja room — it absorbs moisture really well. Same with neem leaves — they are natural anti-fungal and anti-pest.
What to do:
-
Place camphor balls or neem leaves inside drawers, wardrobes, and trunk boxes.
-
Replace every 10–15 days.
-
Bonus: It keeps the furniture smelling fresh too.
3. Polish or Wax Before Monsoon Starts
This is something we usually forget, and then regret 😅
Applying a fresh coat of wood polish or natural wax creates a protective layer. It doesn’t let the water seep in that easily. Plus, your furniture ends up looking shiny and new!
What to do:
-
Use beeswax or good quality wood polish
-
Apply using a soft cloth
-
Let it dry properly
-
Repeat once every year (just before monsoon is best)
4. Don’t Cover Furniture with Plastic
I know, the first instinct is to cover everything with plastic… but please don’t.
Plastic traps the moisture and creates a perfect home for fungus. Not kidding.
What to do:
-
Use breathable cotton covers instead
-
Even better – just dust it regularly and keep the area dry
-
Open up the drawers and cabinets once in a while to let air circulate
5. Use a Dehumidifier or Charcoal
If your area gets too humid (especially places like Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata), you might want to use a small dehumidifier or even activated charcoal pouches.
These guys quietly sit in the corner and soak up all the excess moisture. Total lifesavers.
What to do:
-
Place charcoal pouches inside wardrobes, beds with storage, TV units etc.
-
Replace every 3–4 weeks
-
If you’ve got budget, go for an electric dehumidifier — worth it
Bonus Tip
If you’re thinking of buying new furniture, go for Sheesham wood or Teak – these are naturally resistant to moisture and super durable.
At Ferrowoods, all our wooden beds, wardrobes, center tables, and trunk boxes are made from seasoned hardwood that can handle monsoon pretty well — so less headache for you 😉
Wrapping It Up…
Monsoon is lovely — chai, pakoras, and that cool breeze. But yeah, it’s also a testing time for your wooden furniture.
So just keep in mind:
-
Let your furniture breathe
-
Don’t trap it under plastic
-
Use natural moisture absorbers
-
Keep things polished and clean
You don’t need to do everything fancy. Just be a little mindful, and your wooden furniture will stay strong and beautiful — no matter how crazy the rains get.
